WASHINGTON, Thursday, June 19, 2008 HOPE worldwide has bestowed its Partner of the Year award upon the American Red Cross. The surprise award was received by American Red Cross National Chair of Volunteers Kate Forbes when she spoke at the HOPE worldwide 2008 Global Summit held in Washington, D.C.
The American Red Cross and HOPE worldwide, an international faith-based organization, realized they had a common purpose when the two organizations shared the stage at the 2007 National Conference on Volunteering and Service. Within a few months a Memorandum of Understanding formalized a partnership between the two non-profits in three areas: emergency and disaster preparedness education; youth and young adult programs and services; and blood drive participation.
The strength of the partnership became clear during the 2008 Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. The American Red Cross and HOPE worldwide collaborated in a pilot project—canvassing door-to-door with fire safety and prevention information in ten U. S. cities. More than 2,000 HOPE worldwide volunteers, sometimes entire families, joined with Red Cross volunteers to provide lifesaving fire safety information to more than 42,000 households.
The American Red Cross and HOPE worldwide plan to continue working together to distribute preparedness information and engage communities during next year's King Day of Service. The two organizations are also making plans to recruit blood donors during specific periods of low blood supply and to establish Red Cross School Clubs in several cities.
About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; provides nearly half of the nation's blood supply; teaches lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
