WASHINGTON, Friday, August 01, 2008 — In response to today's media reports, the American Red Cross acknowledges that Bruce Ivins was a volunteer with the Frederick County Chapter of the Red Cross since 2001. Today the Frederick News Post released a file photo of Ivins, which was taken several years ago during a local Red Cross disaster exercise. The American Red Cross and the Frederick County Chapter are not providing further comment out of respect for the Ivins family and all those involved.

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; provides nearly half of the nation's blood supply; teaches lifesaving skills; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization – not a government agency – and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.
